The Movement Disorder Society - European Section (MDS-ES) working with the European Federation of Neurological Societies
Welcome message from Prof. Werner Poewe (Innsbruck, Austria)
Chair, The Movement Disorder Society – European Section and the EFNS/MDS-ES Scientist Panel on Parkinson’s disease and Other Movement Disorders
Firstly, may I introduce the Movement Disorder Society (MDS). MDS is an international society of clinicians and scientists interested in Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. The goals of the Society are to disseminate knowledge, promote research into causes and treatments, and promote training in Movement Disorders.
The EFNS and MDS-ES enjoy a formal collaboration through which MDS-ES takes responsibility for organizing and overseeing all Movement Disorders activities during the annual EFNS Congresses. This includes the organization of the Main Topic, Basic and Advanced Teaching Courses, and Focused Workshops. At each EFNS Congress MDS-ES hosts the MDS European Basal Ganglia Club Session, including the C. David Marsden Invited Lecture featuring an internationally renowned Movement Disorders specialist, followed by the presentation and lively discussion of videos of unusual Movement Disorders. MDS-ES and EFNS jointly fund the award of up to 20 bursaries for young neurologists presenting high quality papers on Movement Disorders at the EFNS Congress. MDS-ES also provides the Movement Disorders programming and faculty for all EFNS Teaching Courses in Eastern Europe.
As Chair of MDS-ES, I also Chair the EFNS/MDS-ES Scientist Panel on Parkinson’s disease and Other Movement Disorders and represent the Panel at the EFNS Scientific Committee and in Congress Planning activities. The Scientist Panel’s main role is to create Task Forces to develop European recommendations on the diagnosis and management of different aspects of Movement Disorders, and we are also presently engaged in collating data on the availability of Parkinson’s disease drugs throughout Europe.
For details on the MDS-ES, I invite you to visit:

Here you will find details of all Movement Disorders educational activities in Europe including the very popular Summer and Winter Schools for young neurologists, where students are given the unique opportunity to examine a wide range of movement disorders patients under the guidance of an expert international faculty. Application forms to host an MDS Ambassador to speak to your national neurological meeting, or for an MDS Visiting Professor Program, can be downloaded. Information is also available about MDS funding to support Movement Disorders education in underserved areas of Europe, and the MDS-ES European Education Committee under the Chairmanship of Prof. Joaquim Ferreira will be delighted to assist you with an application.
