EFNS/MDS-ES Panel on Movement disorders

Movement Disorders Society - European Section (MDS-ES) and European Federation of Neurological Societies Collaboration

The Movement Disorder Society (MDS) is an international society of clinicians and scientists interested in Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. The goals of the Society are to disseminate knowledge, promote research into causes and treatments, and promote training in Movement Disorders.

The EFNS has entered a formal collaboration with MDS-ES, through which MDS-ES takes responsibility for organizing and overseeing all Movement Disorders activities during the annual EFNS Congresses. This includes the organization of the Main Topic, Basic and Advanced Teaching Courses and Focused Workshops. In addition to these programmes, MDS-ES organizes the MDS European Basal Ganglia Club Session which includes the C. David Marsden Invited Lecture at each EFNS Congress. This is a very popular session, in which an internationally renowned speaker provides a keynote lecture, followed by presentation and discussion of videos of unusual Movement Disorders.
MDS-ES has organized the Movement Disorders programmes for all the EFNS Congresses since Vienna in 2002.

Since January 2006, the Chair of MDS-ES has also chaired:  Parkinson’s disease and Other Movement Disorders, an EFNS-/MDS-ES Panel

At each EFNS Congress, MDS-ES provides review for all of the abstracts on Movement Disorders topics, and jointly with EFNS, funds the award of up to 20 bursaries for young neurologists presenting high quality papers on Movement Disorders.
For more information on the co-operation between MDS-ES and EFNS, please download this article published in the MDS-ES May 2006 Newsletter.

For details on the MDS-ES, we invite you to visit: http://www.movementdisorders.org/europeansection/index.shtml

There you will find details of our educational activities in Europe.  Application forms to host an MDS Ambassador to speak to your national neurological meeting, or for an MDS Visiting Professor Program can be downloaded.  Working with EFNS, MDS-ES provides the Movement Disorders programming and faculty for EFNS Teaching Courses in Eastern Europe, and a new MDS-ES programme offering funding for Movement Disorders educational activities in Eastern Europe is now open for applications.

Junior neurologists are encouraged to consider attending the MDS-ES Summer Schools, which offer an intense programme and give participants the unique opportunity to examine a wide range of Movement Disorders patients under the supervision of an international expert faculty.  Details can be obtained from the MDS Website or from Hope Wallace: hwallace@movementdisorders.org
