Handbook of Neurological Management

Volume 1, Second Editon

Edited by Nils Erik Gilhus, Michael Barnes and Michael Brainin

The European Handbook of Neurological Management, is a unique book that brings together peer-reviewed guidelines for the treatment and management of neurological disease. For the first time, neurologists can find advice on management aspects of most neurological disorders that is either evidence-based or, where the evidence is inadequate, the consensus guidance of an international European panel of experts.

The volume 1, second edition of European Handbook of Neurological Management has now been published. It contains the same 40 EFNS guideline documents as the first edition published in 2006. All authors have revised and updated their guidelines. The chapters have been peer-reviewed. The 40 chapters of this Handbook concentrate on treatment of neurological disorders, but also chapters on investigation are included. All guidelines use the EFNS classification scheme for scientific evidence and also for grading of the recommendations given, including the grading of ”Good practice point”. The EFNS scientist panels have been instrumental in producing this Handbook, representing experts from a wider selection of European countries. For several of the chapters, there has been a co-operation with relevant disease-specific societies.

Better treatment and more exact diagnosis is needed in neurology.

This Handbook represents a tool for such improvement.

Each chapter of the handbook is informed by a broad set of experiences – the result of an EFNS task force with a multinational European authorship. Furthermore, where possible, these task forces have collaborated with disease-specific European societies. On occasion, co-authors have been recruited from outside Europe.

The guidelines fall naturally into sections that cover:

  • Investigation: cerebrospinal fluid analysis, imaging, diagnostic antibodies and skin biopsy
  • Major neurological diseases: stroke, migraine, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, mild traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Neuromuscular diseases: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, post-polio syndrome, autoimmune neuromuscular transmission disorders, inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, multifocal motor neuropathy, paraproteinaemic demyelinating neuropathies, limb girdle muscular dystrophies
  • Infections: HIV infection and encephalitis
  • Neurological problems: treatment of neuropathic pain, acute relapses of multiple sclerosis and status epilepticus, to name but a few
  • Sleep disorders: narcolepsy, other sleep disorders in neurodegenerative disorders and stroke
  • Cognitive rehabilitation.
